Gamasutra has the latest Japanese sales charts for Feb. 20th. Listed in the top ten were two PSP games and one for the Nintendo DS. The top selling hardware was the PS2 followed closely by the PSP. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure the PSP is going to be huge once it arrives on our shores. We’ve had several months of pent up demand and hype. Major online retailers EBgames and Gamestop have stopped taking pre orders as they have sold out of their initial allotment.

Here’s the breakdown.
PS2 - 38,954 units -34.04%
PSP - 38,314 unites - 33.48%
DS - 19.54%
GBA - 9.82%
GC - 2.85%
Xbox - 0.26%

PSP rumor du jour, a 50gb drive coming soon.

Some new play screens and details on the Wipeout Pure on PSP at Worthplaying.
Wipeout Pure
“Supporting up to eight players via a Wi-Fi link for multiplayer gameplay, ... Fresh downloadable content that can be saved to a Memory Stick Duo will be made available after launch to expand the racing experience and allow for personalization of the game. Content may include new tracks, ships, skins and music!”

Remember that game which crashed during the E3 demo with Bill Gates and Conan O Brien? That was Enthusia Racing. Here are more details and screens from Worthplaying.

Hoping to shed the memories of last lame Matrix game. Atari and Shiny will hopefully redeem themselves with a new 3rd person shooter Matrix that finally allows you to play as Neo. See Gamedaily for details.

And look at the survivor horror with flesh eating zombies and games like The Suffering and The Punisher. Of course I don’t believe that but with all the media noise it’s getting to the point where even a gamer begins to think there is some truth to the meme.

Now there is empirical evidence to support your argument the next time someone starts making blanket statements like that.

According to this article, an expert has done some number crunching and it turns out that only 16% of video games were rated “Mature” due to excessive violence or sex. Over 50% were rated “Everyone” with 30% being “Teen”.

The problem is that big sellers like GTA and Halo for better or worse brought all the attention.

That news article is the perfect setup for this article on a misguided and ignorant politician pushing an anti violence video game bill into the assembly. Idiot.

That’s it. Ciao
